Many thermoplastics can be fastened together to form strong bonds using chemical adhesives or solvents.
This type of bonding works extremely well with plastic materials such as acrylic, PVC and ABS. However, this process does not currently work as well with high molecular weight plastics such as Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMW). As a rule, polyolefins don’t bond well with solvents or adhesives. However, there are many new adhesives under development that will make it easier to bond these materials in the future.
Typically, surfaces to be bonded are cleaned and made smooth prior to introduction of the cement.
If a solvent cement is used, it actually melts the materials being joined. When the solvent evaporates, the materials have melted together to form a solid joint or bond. Solvent bonding, or chemical welding, is used extensively in the creation of acrylic Point of Purchase (POP) displays and in the installation of PVC plumbing pipe.
An adhesive cement will bond the material by adhering itself to the pieces being joined, providing a solid bridge between the parts. Adhesive cement is used with similar materials to achieve particular types of joints and is used when dissimilar materials need to be joined.
