A mother is accused of leaving her 4-year-old child at Walmart in Newington.

Hilda Barbuena, 24, of New Britain, was shopping at the store on the Berlin Turnpike on Friday. When she was finished, she left the store with the child still there, according to police.

Police said store employees discovered the child wandering alone.

They immediately contacted the Newington Police Department.

Police said they determined that the child had been left alone in the store for an hour.

"Why would you do that, " said Justina Sikorska of Newington.

Barbuena arrived at the store while police were investigating.

"If you leave a 4-year-old child in a store you should know right away if you lost them, " said Ali Noble of Newington.
